STD GONORRHEA: HOW COMMON IS IT?

Anyone can become infected with gonorrhea, and although the overall number of people infected in the United States each year is decreasing, among young people the number is increasing. About a million people are infected each year in this country, more commonly young, sexually active persons and those with multiple sexual partners. Also at higher risk are women who do not use a barrier method of birth control and who use oral contraceptives (the pill), since this practice makes the cervix more vulnerable to infections. Some women erroneously believe that the pill offers protection against STDs this is not true), and therefore they do not use condoms; this practice puts them at higher risk for infection.

Women who have sexual contact only with other women are unlikely to become infected with gonorrhea, since there is usually no contact with the cervix. However, if sex toys are used, there may be a possibility of transmitting gonorrhea.
