LYCOPUS EUROPAEUS – A REMEDY FOR PALPITATIONS

Lycopus europaeus, commonly known as gipsywort or bugleweed, is a little known but efficacious medicinal plant. In Switzerland it is found in some parts of the Churfirst mountains at an elevation of up to 1,000 m (3,280 feet). In the valleys of the Ticino and in Pusciavo it is more abundant. European Lycopus is very similar in content and effect to that found in Virginia, in the United States.

Lycopus produces excellent results in the treatment of mild overactive thyroid conditions (hyperthyroidism) and the accompanying heart palpitations. Even in cases of very strong pounding and nervousness, doses of 5-10 drops have a tranquillising effect. If a hyperthyroid condition has existed for some time, Urticalcin is also recommended, since patients who suffer from palpitations usually lack calcium. I have often been able to achieve excellent results with people who thought they were suffering from a severe heart ailment simply by giving them Lycopus and calcium. It is also interesting to note that a somewhat increased basal metabolism can be normalised with these remedies if they are taken together with a homoeopathic seaweed preparation such as Kelp 4x. However, it is important that patients avoid the use of iodised salt. Lycopus and Urticalcin are also a helpful combination in cases of rapid heart beat due to over-excitability, a frequent complaint in our hectic times. Even though a calming effect can be felt almost immediately, the two natural remedies should be taken over a longer period of time for a more permanent result.
