THE CHOICE OF MUSIC – SORT OF MUSIC

It goes without saying that not every sort of music has the same effect. Some lovers of light music might think it strange that classical music has the best effect on some sick people. It may also seem odd that musicians often do not react to music in the same way as those who do not make music a part of their daily lives. Perhaps this can be attributed to a sort of professional diffidence.

Music for the invalid must be chosen just as carefully as medicine, even with regard to ‘dosage’, so that its therapy can work properly. We should bear in mind the homoeopathic principle that strong stimulants are destructive but weak ones vitalise.

It is interesting to note that there is a resemblance between all biological laws and principles. Just as a stimulating and invigorating medicine is given in the morning and a sedative at night, in the same way, lively music will be found suitable for the mornings and soothing, soft music for the evenings, helping to relax the patient and induce sleep. It is understandable that the choice of music and the volume must be right if the patient is to benefit.
